WEB SITE DESIGN by Helen Gregory / Pinstripe Publishing WHAT IS "WEB SITE DESIGN?" In addition to page appearancelike placement, colors, fonts, graphics, content and links. Web site design is . . . the writing of HTML (HyperText Markup Language), also called the "script" or "code" behind each Web page, that tells each browser receiving it what colors, fonts and graphic images to use, where to place them on a Web page, makes hyperlinks work AND alerts the search engine robots ("spiders" or "bots") that crawl the web to list your page (or not... as you desire!). an aesthetically pleasing use and placement of text, links, graphics and colors that also technically addresses the speed, content and navigation of your site. adequate meta tags that are germane to your site's goals WEBSITE BASICS To have a Web presence or Web site, which is a collection of one or more Web pages, requires three basic things: a registered domain name * suitable webhost space* (server to hold your pages for 24/7 accessibility) prepared web pages and graphics for uploading WHY HIRE ME? I hand code HTML. No WYSIWYG programs that translate into sloppy script and fill your webhost space with unnecessary bytes and javascript. No weird programs that computer users will have to download and install before they can view your site. I know color and design. I'm a freelance artist-illustrator, having worked in pencil, pen and ink, pastel, colored pencil and watercolorwhatever best suits the subject matter and style. I've studied and worked with colors, how they work together, their nuances in meaning, and how to direct the eye using color and composition. I can design custom logos and icons, and I know how to resize, crop, tweak and enhance photos. I know about business, marketing and promotion. I've worked in retail and service businesses, served as an office manager, organized successful events, ran my own retail business and remain self-employed to this date. If you are serious about your business, your Web site needs to reflect that. I subscribe to good Web building standards as defined by the gurus of the industry, and I'll caution you if something you suggest is known to not work or not serve your goals well. Just as folks may judge you or your business based on your Web site's appearance and useability, I'm well aware that my reputation as a Web designer is at stake too. I know how to "write for the Web." I'm also a how-to and creative fiction writer, I have written, illustrated, prepared, self-published, marketed and sold (for a profit) five titles. I know the difference between writing books and writing for the Web. I offer browser-friendly, affordable site-design based on an understanding of your goals for the site, my know-how and experience, and geared to the three most important aspects of any Web site speed, navigation, and content.
